The Spectrum of Teaching Styles: A View to the Future of Research

The spectrum of teaching styles: A view to the future of research is the title of the August edition of the #AIESEPConnect #CoffeeWithColleages discussion organised by the International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (AIESEP).

The discussion is scheduled to take place on 26 August 2022 at 1:30pm Central European Time (CEST) and will be led by the following presenters:

Mark Byra will briefly introduce the Spectrum of Teaching Styles (what it is, who uses it, and for what reasons) and briefly introduce the recently developed 501c3 non-profit organization, the Spectrum Institute for Teaching and Learning (its mission, activities initiated in 2022, and board members) in his presentation. 

Feng-Min Wei, Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Girls High School, Taiwan

This presentation will systematically review the research on the Spectrum for the past few decades. It will first delineate what we have known about the Spectrum and to what kinds of issues the Spectrum was related. In addition to framing current knowledge, this presentation will also prospect future inquiries into the Spectrum by tracing back Mosston’s envision for the Spectrum and its function of individualization.

Donetta Cothran, Professor, Indiana University, USA & Pamela Kulinna, Professor, Arizona State University, USA

This presentation will briefly review a series of three related investigations conducted by our research team that broke new ground in exploring what styles were being used, by whom and what those individuals believed about the styles. We then expand that discussion to other researchers’ work around the central themes of our findings in an attempt to capture a more complete picture of The Spectrum decision making chain. Finally, new paths of inquiry will be suggested regarding The Spectrum and its use.

This presentation will focus on providing a view to the future of research, theoretical implications, and perspectives in relation with the use of the Spectrum of teaching styles in promoting lifelong physical activity and health.
