Laureus World Sports Academy

Global Ambassadors
24/02/2014 10:27

I am extremely excited to hear that the United Nations has approved an official day to celebrate the power of sport to promote peace and unity.

This is an important milestone for me and my colleagues at the Laureus World Sports Academy, who established our organisation to promote these values.

I remember vividly when Nelson Mandela, as Patron of Laureus, delivered what has become an iconic speech at the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards, telling us  “Sport has the power to change the world,” following his own successful efforts to use sport to unite post-apartheid South Africa.

In doing so President Mandela inspired the creation of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which supports a growing community of organisations worldwide who have taken up this cause and who deliver life transforming help to underserved young people through the medium of sport.

The day identifies how sport can promote and instil education, development and peace, solidarity, tolerance, understanding, social inclusion and health. These are also all goals of Laureus.

On behalf of the Laureus World Sports Academy and all the sporting ambassadors who support our cause around the world, I extend congratulations to all those who work in this field and to the UN for providing important recognition of the power of sport as a tool for good.

Edwin Moses

Chairman, Laureus World Sports Academy
