ICSSPE is proud to announce the successful completion of the “Stronger Together: Creating Youth Champions to Transform Communities through Grassroots Sport” project and the official release of the second edition of the Let’s Get Moving Together! toolkit.
With the support of the UNESCO Participation Programme, the Stronger Together project was implemented throughout 2024 and 2025 with the aim of empowering young leaders to use grassroots sport as a practical tool for positive social change. The initiative brought together a co-hort of youth leaders from Namibia, Zambia and South Africa, equipping them with the skills, confidence and international networks to design and deliver safe, inclusive and welcoming grassroots sport initiatives in their communities.
Practical learning through youth leadership and intercultural exchange
The project combined online expert-led capacity-building sessions with an in-person workshop in Cape Town, South Africa, creating a learning environment rooted in real practice and peer exchange. A strong emphasis was placed on intercultural communication, encouraging participants to reflect on how cultural contexts, social norms and local realities shape participation, leadership and inclusion in grassroots sport.
This focus directly informed the content of the second edition of the toolkit. Reflecting on this learning process, Samantha Miyanda (Zambia) shared:
“The most significant impact of this experience was the deepened awareness of cultural diversity and inclusion. It challenged me to reflect on assumptions I had subconsciously made and helped me appreciate the importance of designing tools that respect different cultural contexts, realities, and ways of working.”
What’s new in the second edition of the Let’s Get Moving Together! toolkit
Building on the first edition, the second edition of the Let’s Get Moving Together! toolkit offers practical, easy-to-use strategies that grassroots sport leaders can apply immediately in their daily work.
The most significant addition is Chapter 6, which focuses on intercultural communication in grassroots sport. This new chapter provides best-practice guidance drawn directly from real grassroots experience, supporting leaders to navigate cultural diversity while fostering inclusive participation.
Chapter 6 and the updated toolkit:
- Provide concrete tools and reflection exercises that can be used straight away
- Support the creation of safe, inclusive and welcoming sporting environments
- Share practical examples and lessons learned from youth-led initiatives in Southern Africa
- Help grassroots leaders communicate more effectively with diverse communities, participants and stakeholders
Youth feedback shaping a practical resource
The direct involvement of the youth leaders ensured that the toolkit remains grounded in practice and responsive to the realities of grassroots sport.
Reflecting on working on the second edition, Nabo Yaa Plaatjie (South Africa) noted:
“The knowledge I gained has already transformed the way I think, write, and speak. My colleagues shared practical tools that I was able to implement in my classroom just weeks later. Putting together the final toolkit felt surreal, and seeing our hard work come together reminded me of the power of collaboration and strong leadership.”
Similarly, Linea Kapofi (Namibia) highlighted the toolkit’s immediate applicability at community level:
“This toolkit isn’t just a document; it’s a practical guide that communities anywhere in the world can use to start their own grassroots teams and bring communities together. Seeing how these simple strategies can change lives has turned my passion into a clear mission to make a difference locally.”
Strengthening ICSSPE–UNESCO collaboration
The completion of the Stronger Together project and the publication of the second edition of the Let’s Get Moving Together! toolkit further strengthen the long-standing collaboration between ICSSPE and UNESCO, advancing shared priorities around youth leadership, intercultural dialogue and inclusive grassroots sport development. With the second edition now available, ICSSPE reaffirms its commitment to supporting grassroots sport leaders worldwide with practical, inclusive and experience-based resources that help turn values into action at community level.
