ICSSPE spotlights two exciting developments from one of our members, the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF). These initiatives, the Flying Disc Research Hub and the WFDF Academy, mark important milestones in expanding academic engagement and lifelong learning opportunities across the global flying disc community.
Flying Disc Research Hub — Connecting Academia with Practice
In March 2025, WFDF launched the Flying Disc Research Hub, an innovative online platform designed to foster academic connection, collaboration, and research dissemination within flying disc sports. Hosted within the WFDF Academy system, the Hub serves as a centralized repository of nearly 120 published research papers covering diverse topics such as physical performance, community engagement, sport development, and more.
The Research Hub makes scholarly work more accessible to students, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers — helping translate evidence into practice and encouraging new investigations that deepen our understanding of flying disc sports worldwide. It welcomes contributions from the global academic community, creating an evolving knowledge base that supports both scientific advancement and practical impact.

WFDF Academy — Empowering Learners Across the Globe
Building on its strategic commitment to education, WFDF unveiled the WFDF Academy in November 2025, a comprehensive digital learning platform designed for the global flying disc sport community. From athletes and coaches to teachers, sport administrators, and volunteers, the Academy offers a range of accessible courses, self-study modules, and facilitated training, helping people develop skills, knowledge, and leadership capacity at all levels.
The platform’s offerings include:
- Mini-courses on key topics like safeguarding, gender-equitable competition, and sport integrity
- Introductory courses covering the rules and fundamentals of flying disc disciplines such as Ultimate, Disc Golf, Freestyle, and Guts
- Resources tailored to national federations, anti-doping education, diversity & inclusion, and research connections through the Flying Disc Research Hub itself.
With its accessible design and global reach, initially piloted in more than 90 countries, the WFDF Academy empowers stakeholders everywhere to learn at their own pace, earn certificates, and strengthen their contribution to sport development and community-building.
