Tansin Benn Awarded
Tansin Benn has received the outstanding contribution award from the Muslim Women´s Sport Foundation UK. Benn is the President of the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women.
She is also a recently retired professor from the School of Education at the University of Birmingham. Her research and publications have largely focused on the experiences of Muslim females and the effects of culture and religion on sport participation. She initially began advocating for greater opportunity for Muslim women to enter teaching in the UK while Head of Physical Education Teacher Training at Westhill College, Birmingham. She then continued to demonstrate the barriers holding women back from sport participation and promoting the role of Muslim women and choice concerning sport participation and dress codes. Benn also organised an international seminar at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman that produced the ´Accept and Respect´ international declaration that promotes the involvement of Muslim women and girls in sport. In 2011 the book ´Muslim Women and Sport´ through Routledge was produced (Benn, Pfister & Jawad (Eds.), 2011). She is currently part of an ´Experts Panel´ that will advise the Commonwealth Secretariat in the preparation of a Ministerial Guidance for improving ´Sport and Development and Peace´ amongst 54 Commonwealth nations.
