Israeli Minister of Sport Miri Regev, and German Parliamentary State Secretary Ole Schröder have agreed to intensify their long-standing relationship in Sport.

The decision was announced during a bilateral symposium of Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior, which played host to the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sport.

The government members and all participants of this symposium, held 8th October 2015 in Berlin, began by looking back at 50 years of diplomatic relations between the countries and the different ways, actors in sport and sport politics used to re-approach the people of both countries.

The second part of the symposium was devoted to a number of current issues in sport politics, namely the usage of sport for development programmes to advance community development, necessary steps to advance participation opportunities for all members of society, the need to support sport with nationwide programmes and sufficient infrastructure, as well as the protection against corruption, illegal betting and match-fixing.

Uri Schaefer, the highest civil servant in Israeli sport and Acting ICSSPE President praised the visionary discussions and decisions to further develop the co-operation between both ministries: “If we ensure that sport is not misused for personal and short-term interests, we all, engaged in sport in many different ways, can contribute a lot to social development and, in the specific case of Israel and Germany, to a stable and trustful relationship between both countries.”

The Federal Ministry of the Interior, Germany, and the Ministry of Culture and Sport, Israel, in co-operation with ICSSPE, jointly organised the symposium which was entitled Opportunities and Challenges in Sports - Bilateral German-Israeli Symposium.
