ICSSPE's Sport Science Research Manager, Pascal Camara, in collaboration with Professor Louis Mustakas (University of Applied Sciences Kufstein) and Dr. Maximilian Seltmann (German Sport University Cologne), co-authored a contribution for the recently released Routledge volume European Model of Sport: Myth or Reality?, edited by Borja García and Vanja Smokvina.
Their chapter, titled The African Sport Model: Between Pan-Africanism and European/Olympic Hegemony, offers an in-depth analysis of how African nations have historically engaged with, adapted, and sometimes resisted dominant global sport structures. The chapter contributes to the growing discourse on regional models of sport, highlighting both convergences and tensions between African and European/Olympic frameworks.
Key insights from the chapter include:
-
The African Sport Model shares several core features with the dominant European Model of Sport.
-
During the 1960s–1980s, African sport movements were closely aligned with Pan-African ideals, liberation efforts, and anti-colonial narratives.
-
Public institutions historically played a pivotal role in shaping sport development across the continent.
-
The rise of continental bodies such as ANOCA diminished the influence of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA), often resulting in fragmented or conflicting national sport governance structures.
ICSSPE is a long-standing partner of Routledge, which has published several of our publications over the years.
