Durban will not host the 2022 Commonwealth Games

Missing Financial Guarantees

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced that Durban, South Africa was stripped of the right to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The decision was taken because the South African Government could not provide financial guarantees and other commitments made when it won the bid in 2015. Since winning the games as sole bidder in September 2015, Durban missed deadlines to provide financial guarantees and setting up an organising committee.

Durban provided a revised budget and hosting proposal in March 2017 to the CGF but it was not accepted. According to the CGF the revised hosting proposal did not meet a number of key obligations and commitments in areas such as governance, venues, funding and risk management and assurance.
