ICSSPE contributed to the newly released Global Physical Literacy Action Framework (GloPL), a major international initiative aimed at strengthening global coordination and action to promote physical literacy and meaningful physical activity for all.
Developed through a collaborative effort led by Deakin University’s Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), the framework brings together leading researchers, organisations, and networks from across the fields of sport science, education, health, and policy. ICSSPE joined a group of international societies and partners contributing to the dissemination and impact of this important initiative.
A global roadmap for physical literacy
The Global Physical Literacy Action Framework was developed in response to the growing recognition of physical literacy as a key foundation for lifelong engagement in physical activity. Despite increasing awareness of its importance, many initiatives around the world remain fragmented and lack a common direction for coordinated action.
Through a collaborative and consensus-driven process involving international experts, the framework establishes a shared vision and strategic orientation for advancing physical literacy worldwide.
At its core, the framework promotes a holistic understanding of physical literacy, emphasising the integration of physical, psychological, social and cognitive capacities that enable individuals to participate confidently and meaningfully in physical activity throughout life.
Five key areas for action
The framework identifies five interconnected areas for action that can guide research, policy, education, and practice globally:
- Advocacy
- Practice
- Education
- Assessment
- Research
Together, these areas provide a structured pathway for governments, educators, researchers, sport organisations, and community stakeholders to work collaboratively in advancing physical literacy and improving the quality of physical activity experiences.
The overarching vision of the initiative is to harness the potential of physical literacy to enable quality physical activity experiences for everyone worldwide.
ICSSPE’s contribution
As an international organisation dedicated to advancing sport science, physical education, and evidence-based policy, ICSSPE supports the framework as an important step toward strengthening global collaboration in the promotion of active and healthy lifestyles.
By bringing together researchers, practitioners, policymakers and international organisations, the Global Physical Literacy Action Framework reinforces the need for shared language, coordinated action and cross-sector collaboration in addressing the global challenge of physical inactivity.
