Loughborough University Awarded UNESCO Chair

Sport, Physical Activity and Education for Development

Loughborough University has been awarded a UNESCO Chair in Sport, Physical Activity and Education for Development.

 

The Chair will be led by Professor Richard Giulianotti, and feature a large team of academics and students. They will undertake research and education, as well as contributing to enhancing policy and practice, on the use of sport, physical activity and education for development purposes. A particular focus will be on supporting the pursuit of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, notably with respect to good health and wellbeing, quality education, gender equality, decent work and economic growth, reducing inequalities, and climate action. 

 

The Chair team are strongly committed to collaborative work with external partners across the public, private, voluntary, and sport sectors in pursuit of these development goals. Further activities will include networking and collaborating with other UNESCO Chairs, and building international partnerships for research and teaching purposes with external academics and educational institutions.  

 

The Chair is based in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. Current and future PhD students will be invited to become formally affiliated to the Chair, and to be involved in its activities and networks. The Chair is also linked to a Masters programme – the MSc in Sport Management, Politics and International Development – which is located within the School.
