IPC Launches Classification Research Grants

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has launched a new funding initiative to support high-quality research that advances classification in Para sport. The 2025 IPC Classification Research Grant Scheme offers grants of up to EUR 250,000 per project, aimed at strengthening the scientific foundations of classification systems across all Para sports.

The IPC's move comes as part of its implementation of the revised 2024 IPC Classification Code, which sets new standards for transparency, fairness, and scientific rigour. By supporting evidence-based research, the IPC aims to ensure that classification remains a cornerstone of integrity in Para sport competition.

Funding Tiers and Eligibility

The grant scheme features four funding tiers:

• Up to EUR 65,000

• EUR 65,001–90,000

• EUR 90,001–125,000

• EUR 125,001–250,000

Eligible applicants include:

• International Federations (IFs)

• International Organisations of Sport for the Disabled (IOSDs)

• Regional Organisations (RIFs)

• Universities and research institutes (with preference for projects endorsed by an IF)

Research Scope

Funded projects are expected to contribute to one or more of the following areas:

• Measurement of impairment and performance determinants

• Defining or reviewing Minimum Impairment Criteria and sport class boundaries

• Enhancing classification protocols, including the use of innovative or AI-driven technologies

• Evaluating adaptive equipment and its implications for classification

• Strengthening the evidence base for classification systems

Projects can run between 12 and 36 months, but must be completed no later than 31 October 2028.

Application Timeline

The first call for applications is currently open. Proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis, with a submission deadline of 30 September 2025. Applicants will be notified of outcomes within four to six weeks of the deadline. A second call for applications is expected in the second half of 2026.
