The Transnational Working Group for the Study of Gender and Sport (TWG–G&S) invites scholars, practitioners, policymakers and students from around the world to participate in its 15th annual meeting. Over the last two decades, this group has become a leading forum for interdisciplinary, transnational debate at the intersection of gender and sport.
This year’s keynote theme, “20 Years of Gender in Sport – Progresses and Backlashes”, prompts critical reflection on how far the field has come, and where new challenges remain. Hosted by the Department of Gender Studies and the Department of Sports and Health Sociology at the University of Göttingen (Germany), the meeting offers both a rich academic programme and networking opportunities in a vibrant research community. From mentoring emerging scholars to supporting advanced research, the TWG–G&S continues to build an inclusive space for knowledge exchange and collaborative growth.
Key Themes and Topics
Over the past twenty years, research on gender in sport has grown to include topics such as trans and non-binary athlete experiences, menstruation and pregnancy in elite sport, as well as renewed debates around hegemonic masculinity and queerphobia in sports culture. This year’s conference invites contributions on a wide range of topics, including (but not limited to):
- Gender equity and sustainability in sport
- LGBTIQ+ experiences and queer approaches
- Race, intersectionality and sport practices
- Gender and parasports
- Discrimination, harassment and abuse in sport contexts
- New technologies, innovation, elite sport
- Coaching and refereeing through a gender lens
- Sport media, gendered representation, policy and governance
- Youth sport, physical education, physical activity and gendered dimensions
