Marianne Meier to Present at Communities and Crisis

Promoting a Holistic Gender Approach
10/09/2014 16:23

At the upcoming Communities and Crisis Seminar Marianne Meier (Terre des Hommes, Switzerland) will talk to the participants and hold a presentation entitled “Kicking like a Girl? Insights on Gender, Sport and Development.”

Within her presentation she will emphasise the link between sport and gender, which is strongly determined by historical and patriarchal structures, and she will promote a holistic gender approach not only focussing on girls and women. Furthermore her presentation will stress the decisive influence of the socio-cultural context on any sport intervention. Meier points out that “female ‘asportism’ is not innate, for example, but mainly socially constructed.” Thus she will aim at sensitising the participants to become aware of their potential personal assumptions linked to gender and sport. Thereby, she wants “to encourage critical reflection and an inclusive approach to work in a professional way.”

The work of Marianne Meier focuses on diversity, gender, empowerment, football, and monitoring and evaluation. She holds a Ph.D. in sport pedagogy and currently works for the Terre des Hommes International Federation where she is a board member and head of the Children WIN project, which focusses on both positive and negative effects of Mega Sporting Events on children. Prior to her work for Terre des Hommes, she worked at the Swiss Academy for Development (SAD), where she liaised with NGOs and conducted workshops all around the world. In addition to her function at Terre des Hommes, she is an executive board member of the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW), an Advisory Council member of Women Win and an SAD associate.
