On July 19, 2025, ICSSPE hosted a thought-provoking and highly engaging workshop, "An Inclusive Approach to University Sport: Defining the Path Forward", as part of the FISU World Conference in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. Held in Bochum, the event brought together experts, athletes, and academics from around the world.
The session, moderated by Prof. Dr. Ruth Crabtree (Sheffield Hallam University and ICSSPE Executive Board Member), sparked vibrant dialogue and deep reflection, with enthusiastic participation from the audience. We were especially pleased to see so many questions and contributions from attendees, which enriched the discussion and underscored the urgency and relevance of the topic.
Our distinguished panellists brought diverse perspectives and expertise to the table:
- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosa Diketmüller (University of Vienna, Austria) shared insights on gender, diversity, and health promotion in sport.
- Prof. Dr. Karin Volkwein-Caplan (West Chester University, USA) explored cultural dynamics and sustainability within university sports structures.
- Kim Robins (Paralympian, Australia) offered a powerful personal narrative on overcoming barriers through sport and championing inclusion for athletes with disabilities.
The panel examined key themes such as the barriers faced by underrepresented groups, the influence of institutional policies and cultural practices on participation, and innovative strategies being used around the world to foster inclusive sport environments. Audience members, many of whom were ICSSPE members, actively engaged with the panel, asking critical questions and sharing their own experiences from campuses globally.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our panellists for their time, passion, and expertise; to our moderator, Prof. Dr. Ruth Crabtree, for skillfully guiding the conversation; to our hosts at the FISU World Conference for providing a platform for this important dialogue; and to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion.
