The University of Graz invites scholars, educators, and sport professionals to the interdisciplinary conference "KÖRPER: KULT(UR) : ATHLETIK : IDEAL” (Bodies : Culture : Athletics : Ideal), taking place on 25 - 26 September 2025 in Graz, Austria.
Hosted by the Institute of Movement Science, Sport and Health in collaboration with the Institute of Antiquity, this event brings together researchers from across disciplines to explore the cultural, philosophical, and political dimensions of athletic body ideals from antiquity to the present day.
Key themes include:
- The role of athleticism in ancient Greek and Roman culture
- The transformation of body ideals in medieval, modern, and contemporary societies
- Representations of strength, beauty, and health in sport, media, and politics
- Inclusive and critical perspectives on physical ideals and their societal implications
The programme features academic talks, interactive discussions, and a public science panel with athletes, sport scientists, and students reflecting on the role of athletic ideals in shaping personal and social identities.
This conference offers valuable insights for ICSSPE members interested in the historical roots and modern relevance of physical culture and education. It encourages critical engagement with the legacy of ancient ideals in today’s sporting and health-related practices.
