GTE online session – “Women Leaders in Sport” commemorating International Women´s Day

In celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th, ICSSPE continues its commitment to gender equality with a compelling roundtable discussion on "Women Leaders in Sport," a part of our Global Teaching Excellence (GTE) session.

Global Teaching Excellence (GTE) is a collaborative effort between ICSSPE and the World Association for Sport Management (WASM), catering to individuals passionate about learning and teaching within the sports and physical activity domain. GTE, designed to elevate best practices in teaching, offers a series of open online events throughout the year, fostering discussions, learning opportunities, and comprehensive understanding of teaching excellence. As we honor International Women's Day and within the context of our Erasmus+ project GAP-Women, the upcoming GTE roundtable zeroes in on the pivotal theme of "Women Leaders in Sport."

Ruth M Crabtree (UK) is an Associate Professor and has over 30 years’ experience of working within Higher Education. An advocate for teaching excellence, Ruth research specialises in student engagement and inspiring the next generation of professionals for work in the diverse, global sport industry.  Ruth is currently President of the World Association for Sport Management and has recently joined the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport & Physical Activity Workforce Skills Observatory Board aimed at strategic workforce planning and development within the sport and physical activity industry. In 2019 Ruth was awarded the European Association for Sport Management Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her work within sport management. 

Helen Mann (UK) is a Senior Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University and has over 22 years’ experience of working within Higher education. She has significant experience in the sport industry working in development roles for various National Governing Bodies of Sport, Local Authorities and National Coaching Organisations. This experience of working in underrepresented environments has instilled Helen’s passion as a strong female advocate in sport. She leads on a university project ‘SHU Gamechangers’ which aims to increase confidence and leadership skills amongst female student communities and increase recruitment of female students on to future Sport and Physical Activity programmes.

Eva Werthmann (GER) is the Head of Corporate Communications at the German Olympic Sports Confederation (NOC Germany). She has over 15 years’ experience in the field of sport and communication, having previously worked at the International Paralympic Committee and the German Triathlon Federation. During her time at the German Triathlon Federation, she has been part of the media and marketing commission of the European Triathlon Federation and the Women’s Committee of World Triathlon. Her passion for sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games has had a major influence on her professional career. 

Garima Joshi (India) is an International Para Athlete and Motivational Speaker from Ranikhet, Uttarakhand. Before suffering a life-changing accident while running on the roadside in Karnataka on the 31st May 2018, Grima was national athlete in 800m, 1500m and 3000m. Following her recovery from this incident, she started competing in various national and international Para sport competitions in Javelin throw, Discus throw and Shotput. She has also served as captain of the national Wheelchair Basketball team. She exploited the power of her communication skills and became a motivational speaker for young people, most especially girls. She has since been awarded with over 10 recognitions including the 2017 and 2019 Women Empowerment award, international icon award 2022, excellence award 2023, among others.
