The Griffith University, Australia, invites academics and researchers to submit expressions of interest to contribute to the forthcoming Routledge International Handbook ‘Olympic Transformations – Connection, Place, and Legacy’. Commissioned by Routledge and scheduled for publication in 2028, the Handbook will bring together leading scholars to analyse and reimagine the Olympic movement at a time of significant global change.

Published in the year of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and four years ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Handbook will provide a timely interdisciplinary resource examining the changing relationship between global sport events, society, policy, place and the environment.

Bringing together approximately 30 chapters from across a range of disciplines, Olympic Transformations aims to combine research excellence with practical relevance. Contributions will explore issues at the forefront of Olympic studies while considering how research can inform policy, planning and practice surrounding major international sporting events.

The editors seek to produce a comprehensive Handbook that is broad in coverage, timely in scope and critical in insight. Contributions should demonstrate originality and clear relevance to academic, practitioner and stakeholder audiences.

Call for Chapters

Researchers are invited to submit expressions of interest proposing a chapter for consideration in the Handbook. The open call follows the confirmation of a number of specifically invited chapters and is intended to provide researchers from the wider academic community with an opportunity to contribute to the publication.

While proposals addressing the wider themes of the Handbook are welcomed, the editors particularly encourage expressions of interest in the following areas:

Enabling sport, performance, health and inclusion

Athlete talent search and identification

Performance and technology innovation

Connecting people and place

The Olympic Truce: envisioning a peaceful society in a troubled world

Politicisation of Olympic bidding

Sportswashing and human rights

A better future for our environment

Olympic Games and climate change action

Transforming urban infrastructure

Olympic transformation: from sustainability to regeneration

Expression of interest requirements

Expressions of interest should include:

Proposed chapter title

Abstract of 250–300 words

Name, institutional affiliation and contact information of the author or authors

Submission deadline: Tuesday, 18 August 2026
